Chelsea sign £50m Torres

Chelsea have completed the signing of Spain striker Fernando Torres from Liverpool in a deal reported to be worth £50 million.

Torres has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract that puts his earnings on a par with the highest paid players at Stamford Bridge - such as captain John Terry and Frank Lampard.
Torres joined Liverpool following a £20 million move from Atletico Madrid in 2007 and set a new record for the most prolific foreign goalscorer ever in a debut season in England, beating Ruud van Nistelrooy's 23 goals for Manchester United.
The 26-year-old scored 65 goals during his three year stay at Anfield and although he helped Liverpool finish second in the Premier League in the 2008-09 season, the club missed out on qualification for the Champions League last term and Torres leaves having failed to win a trophy.
That is something he will be hoping to put right at Stamford Bridge as the reigning Premier League champions look to defend their title and go one better than Chelsea's Champions League final appearance in 2008.
Speaking at Stamford Bridge after finalising the move, Torres, who was also pictured with a Chelsea shirt said: "I am very happy with my transfer to Chelsea and I am looking forward very much to helping my new team-mates this season and for many years to come. Having played against Chelsea many times since coming to England, and in some very big games I will never forget, I know there are many great players here and I will work hard to win a place in the team. I hope I can score some important goals for the supporters to enjoy this season."
"This is a very significant day for Chelsea, capturing one of the best players in the world with his peak years ahead of him," said Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck. "We have long admired the talents of a player who is a proven goalscorer in English football and Fernando's arrival is a sign of our continuing high ambitious. I hope every Chelsea fan is as excited as I am with this news."
Blues Chief executive Ron Gourlay added: "Signing a player of the stature of Fernando Torres benefits the club on many levels. Carlo Ancelotti was keen to add his talents to the squad as we continue our quest for three trophies this season, we are delighted we have succeed with that wish, and this signing will undoubtedly aid the club in realising our worldwide potential."
Meanwhile, Liverpool have confirmed the loan signing of Coventry midfielder Conor Thomas, 17, with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season.

FA Cup Team of the Week

Jamie Jones' reward for an outstanding display for Leyton Orient in their fine win over Swansea became evident when the draw for the Fifth Round was made on Sunday. Next up for Jones in the FA Cup will be Arsenal, after he kept the Swans at bay with a string of fine stops, the pick being a superb reflex save from Cedric Van der Gun.

That Manchester City didn't suffer an embarrassing defeat at League One outfit Notts County was largely due to Micah Richards. The 22-year-old epitomised the spirit required on a pudding of a pitch against a team who were more than happy to get in City's faces. He defended stoutly and was threatening going forward. It was his break and pinpoint cross that led to Edin Dzeko's equaliser.
If Richards was the main reason City escaped with a draw then Krystian Pearce played a big part in ensuring City's big guns could only find the net once. The centre back relished the test of shackling the likes of Dzeko, Jo and Toure, flying into tackles, breaking up countless attacks and putting his head in where it hurts. A typically battling display from a well versed defender.
Given that Watford had notched up 13 goals in their last four home games, League One leaders Brighton deserve a collective pat on the back for keeping a clean sheet at Vicarage Road. Inigo Calderon is a firm favourite with Seagulls fans and after his solid performance at the back it is clear to see why. He played his part in repelling a previously potent Hornets front line.
Danny Murphy celebrated signing a year's extension to his contract at Fulham by steering the Cottagers past a woeful Tottenham unit on Sunday. As Michael Dawson pressed the self-destruct button Murphy dispatched two excellent penalties to put the game beyond much doubt inside 14 minutes. A calming influence on the park, he is Fulham's chief string puller.
David Bentley hauled Birmingham back into their Midlands derby with Coventry in spectacular style. Showing glimpses of the form that once propelled him into the England squad, the former Blackburn player rifled in a 30 yard drive with the Blues trailing 2-0. That proved the catalyst for a spirited comeback, with Bentley dangerous throughout the 90 minutes.
Another hero in Notts County's draw with Manchester City was goalscorer Neal Bishop. The midfielder went toe-to-toe with Yaya Toure and Patrick Vieira in the middle of the park and more than held his own. He popped up with the Magpies' goal with a near post flick on, and showed huge reserves of energy as he persistently hustled and harried City's expensive players from the first whistle to last.
Burnley ended Burton's brave run in the FA Cup and Chris Eagles was their chief tormentor. The former Manchester United winger popped up with two goals; the first was a fine solo effort as he collected Jack Cork's back heel, shimmied into the area and finished calmly. The second was a comedy of errors on Burton's part that led to a tap in from two yards, but they all count.
Victor Obinna was clearly so perturbed by the news that West Ham have tied up the loan signing of Robbie Keane that he thought he'd better pull his finger out against Nottingham Forest. The on-loan striker grabbed a hat-trick at Upton Park and registered his first after just four minutes, diverting Mark Noble's effort into the net. A penalty followed wrapped up the treble but before that he scored an audacious lob from the right touchline that may well have been an errant cross. Still, at the risk of repeating myself, they all count.

Matt Tubbs cemented his place as a Crawley Town legend with the winner against Torquay, but his legacy grew several sizes when the draw revealed the non-league outfit would be travelling to Old Trafford next. His intelligent run and smart finished settled a pulsating tie on the English Riviera against Torquay, and though he missed a penalty, he can forever claim to have set up a tie with Manchester United.
There's something about Chelsea that Louis Saha clearly likes. The striker netted his seventh goal in eight games against the Premier League champions and struck fear into the heart of John Terry, who was led a merry dance last time he ventured out at Goodison Park. The striker's header was a routine finish but his link and hold up play was formidable. When fit, he is club's best striker by a mile.
I'll wager that Glaswegian Steve Evans is the happiest man in England tonight. Not only did he steer non-league Crawley Town past Torquay but he was then handed a chance to test his mettle against the English game's most famous product of Glasgow, Sir Alex Ferguson. The other Red Devils gaffer isn't lacking confidence either saying: "We will approach the tie in a really positive nature." We're all with you, Steve.

Inter deny planning £40m Bale bid

Inter Milan official Ernesto Paolillo has denied a report in The Guardian which suggested the club are planning to offer £40 million for Tottenham star Gareth Bale in the summer.

The Guardian detailed how Inter were willing to pay a record fee for a British player in order to sign Bale, who memorably scored a hat-trick against theNerazzurri at San Siro this season, before giving Maicon a torrid time in the return Champions League fixture at White Hart Lane.
The report regarding Inter's interest in Bale was published on Thursday evening but the Italian champions wasted little time in rejecting suggestions that president Massimo Moratti had decided to make Bale his key acquisition at the end of the season.
"It is incorrect," Inter chief executive officer Paolillo told Bloomberg. "It's not true."
Tottenham have repeatedly maintained that they have no interest in selling Bale, who over the past 12 months has been one of the leading players in the Premier League.

Gardner seals thrilling comeback

Lifelong Birmingham fan Craig Gardner sent City through to their first major Wembley final for 55 years with an extra-time winner in the Carling Cup semi-final clash with West Ham at St Andrew's.
Gardner's goal - via Robert Green's blunder - capped a dramatic comeback by Alex McLeish's side who had fallen 3-1 behind on aggregate after Carlton Cole's superb first-half strike.
Lee Bowyer and Roger Johnson forced the game into extra-time before Gardner's moment of glory.
West Ham were the better side in the opening 45 minutes with Cole causing them plenty of problems.
But City were transformed after the interval with substitute Nikola Zigic causing plenty of problems after his half-time introduction and with Barry Ferguson pulling the strings in midfield.
The Hammers were forced to defend desperately for long spells but eventually cracked under the pressure.
West Ham started well and almost caught out the home side on the counter attack when a fine pass from Mark Noble allowed Zavon Hines a run at goal.
But Ben Foster was well placed to block the shot from a wide angle.
Cole then should have done better when he fired over from inside the area after latching onto a ball over the top from former Blues defender Matthew Upson.
Liam Ridgewell made a crucial interception to cut out a cross from the by-line by Cole as the Hammers started to enjoy a spell of pressure.
Then after 31 minutes a superb strike from Cole put the Hammers ahead on the night and 3-1 on aggregate.
The England striker was allowed time 35 yards out to line up his shot but there was no doubting the quality of the strike as it flew past Foster into the net.
Birmingham tried to retaliate and Green punched out an effort from Matt Derbyshire and clung onto a Sebastian Larsson free-kick.
But Johnson was relieved when the ball struck his knee inside the Blues area and hit the outside of a post with Foster beaten.
McLeish made a half-time change with Derbyshire making way for Zigic.
Gardner was unfortunate after 53 minutes when his 25-yard drive hit the inside of a post and flew across the goal without crossing the line.
Birmingham tried to build up some momentum and a deep cross from Ridgewell was headed across goal by Jiranek.
But Jerome was unable to keep down his shot which flew wide.
City's pressure was now relentless and Green turned a Ridgewell header around the post from Larsson's corner.
Then after 59 minutes Bowyer reduced the arrears.
Another Larsson corner was not dealt with by the Hammers and the ball broke to Bowyer who hammered the ball past Green from 12 yards out.
Blues were almost caught on the counter-attack when a low cross from Cole just evaded the run into the box of Hines.
West Ham were hanging on desperately to their lead and Green did well to turn aside a shot from Ferguson which flew through a ruck of players.
The home side were in complete control and Green was booked for time-wasting.
Green tipped over a Jerome header from Larsson's corner and after 79 minutes Johnson brought Blues level.
Bowyer supplied the cross and Johnson rose above the Hammers defence to head past Green.
Jerome could have won the game for City in normal time but Green smothered his low shot inside the box.
Ferguson and Dyer were both yellow carded in the final minute after squaring up to each other.
Then in the dying seconds Green fingertipped Gardner's low drive onto a post.
But Gardner was not to be denied after 94 minutes although Green should have done better.
His swerving shot was well struck but Green looked to have it covered only for the ball to slip away from his grasp into the corner of the net.
Parker showed good control in the box but shot over and Dyer shot over when well placed inside the box.
Tomkins and Cole were booked for dissent early in the second period of extra-time.
Foster held onto a scissor kick from Cole and Green denied Murphy when put clear by Ferguson.
  • Gardner hails dream winnerBirmingham match-winner Craig Gardner savoured an ''unbelievable'' experience after firing his boyhood club to Wembley. And he told Sky Sports 1: ''It's unbelievable, you dream of these things. I was saying to my mates I wanted to get the winner to take us there and to do it was unbelievable.''Carlton Cole's screamer to open the scoring on the night had put the Hammers 3-1 ahead on aggregate before Lee Bowyer and Roger Johnson set up extra time.Keeper Ben Foster admitted Birmingham had done things the hard way, saying: ''As always, it takes a goal against to get us going. (The final) will be a great event for the fans, it's been a while and for a lot of the lads, it may be the only time we play in a final.''We've got nothing to lose, its a one-off game and anything can happen. We've just got to play like we did in the second half and hopefully get the result.''Manager Alex McLeish told Sky Sports 1: ''We were down and out, I said to the players at half-time that to all intents and purposes we were out of the cup.''I had to make the change and have a instant impact. I said to them if they get a chance to cross, to put it in the box for the presence of Zigic. It was his best game for us, he was very difficult to handle.''We tried our best in the first half but we huffed and puffed without troubling them. Zigic made the difference. It will be an enormous pride for me to lead the team out at Wembley, it's a dream come true.''Gardner was twice denied by the woodwork in the 90 minutes, and McLeish acknowledged: ''It was third time lucky, and it was a tremendous goal.''Gardner himself joked: ''I just kept trying - as 'Fozzy' knows, when I let one go it's hard for the keeper!''

    Gunners off to Wembley

    Scoring Summary

    ArsenalIpswich Town
    Nicklas Bendtner (61')
    Laurent Koscielny (64')
    Cesc Fábregas (77')
Arsenal booked their place at Wembley as they finally broke down Ipswich to win 3-0 in the Carling Cup semi-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium.
The Championship club were protecting a slender 1-0 lead from a fortnight ago in Suffolk, and defended resolutely to frustrate the Gunners for more than an hour.
However, Nicklas Bendtner finally ended their resistance with a fine individual goal before Laurent Koscielny headed in a second and captain Cesc Fabregas kept Arsene Wenger's men on course for a first trophy since 2005.
Nine thousand Ipswich fans had made the journey from Suffolk, perhaps more in hope than genuine expectation of a cup shock.
Arsenal, who named a strong side, made a positive start, and Van Persie - who missed the first leg at Portman Road, but had struck six goals in his last three appearances - fired a volley just over the angle from Bacary Sagna's cross.
Fabregas used his programme notes to hit back at claims from Roberto Martinez he had dived to win a penalty during the 3-0 Barclays Premier League win over Wigan here on Saturday.
After 10 minutes, the Spain World Cup winner burst into the Ipswich box and went down under an outstretched arm from Gareth McAuley, but referee Mark Halsey waved play on.
McAuley was then in the thick of the action at the other end, heading over a deep free-kick into the Arsenal danger zone.
There was then a stoppage after Sagna needed treatment following an accidental clash of heads with his keeper Wojciech Szczesny when trying to defend.
The France international was unable to continue with what looked like possibly a broken nose, so Emmanuel Eboue replaced him after 18 minutes.
A clever flick from Van Persie released Fabregas into the right side of the Ipswich area, but his low shot was saved at the near post by Marton Fulop.
Van Persie then went within inches of levelling the tie when his header crashed against the bar from Bendtner's right-wing cross.
Bendtner's shot was blocked after Fulop dropped a free-kick in the six-yard box as the Tractor Boys continued to defend resolutely.
Jack Wilshere chipped the ball through to Fabregas in the left side of the box, but after bringing it down superbly, the skipper could only drill a low shot across the face of goal - after which the travelling fans took great delight in chanting `1-0 to the rugby team' in reference to Fabregas' post-match comments following the first leg.
It was more of the same at the start of the second half, as Arsenal had plenty of possession, but were faced with trying to break down an organised resistance, Ipswich deploying two banks of four men behind the ball.
The pressure, though, was relentless and when the breakthrough finally came after 61 minutes, it was thanks to a moment of real quality from the much-criticised Bendtner.
A quick ball from Wilshere out to the left was brought down superbly by the Dane, who then cut inside with a deft backheel before curling a low shot into the bottom right corner.
Before Ipswich could recover, it was 2-0.
Fulop came to punch a left-wing corner from Arshavin, but got nowhere near the ball as Koscielny headed in from six yards.
Chants of `Wembley' started to ring out around the stadium as the Gunners fans started to dream of an end to their six-season trophy drought.
There was a warning, though, when substitute Jason Scotland broke into the left of the penalty area and his angled shot was saved at the near post.
Fabregas, however, ended any hopes of a comeback after 77 minutes when he slotted home after being played in by Arshavin following a surging 40-yard run.
