Arsenal banish demons

Arsenal moved back to second place in the Premier League after finally beating title rivals Chelsea for the first time since November 2008 as the Blues' poor run continued.
The Gunners had lost each of their previous five matches against Chelsea, but Alex Song put them ahead before half-time, with quickfire strikes from captain Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott giving Arsene Wenger's side a three-goal cushion.
Chelsea reduced the deficit through Branislav Ivanovic, but there was no way back for Carlo Ancelotti's men, who have now taken just six points from their last eight league games - the club's worst run since 1998.
Arsenal, beaten at Manchester United in their previous game, were positive during the opening exchanges.
Robin van Persie almost collected Song's chip into the box, but the ball bounced just ahead of the Dutch striker.
There was a warning with Chelsea's first meaningful attack as Didier Drogba - with 13 goals in as many games against the Gunners - shrugged off his marker to drag a 20-yard shot wide.
John Terry pulled back Van Persie as the Gunners looked to break on the half-way line, but a stern talking-to from referee Mark Clattenburg was all the Chelsea skipper received.
The home side continued to press, and had a penalty appeal waved away when Florent Malouda looked to have made some contact with Van Persie at the edge of the box.
Nasri's 25-yard free-kick was on target, but held by Petr Cech.
Walcott latched on to a long ball over the Chelsea defence, but just as he aimed to cut back into the area, his touch was poor and Terry recovered to clear.
On 29 minutes, former Gunner Ashley Cole went into the referee's book for tripping Walcott as his England colleague turned him on the right touchline.
Van Persie was then put through into the left by Nasri after some clever one-touch passing, the Dutchman snatched at his angled shot, which flew high and wide.
Salomon Kalou was perhaps fortunate to receive only a yellow card after jumping in, studs up on Gael Clichy.
Arsenal increased the tempo as half-time approached.
Walcott scampered into the right side of the Chelsea penalty area and was blocked by Cech at the near post before the goalkeeper turned over Nasri's chip which was looping into the top-left corner.
The Gunners finally made the breakthrough after 43 minutes.
Jack Wilshere and Song exchanged passes on the edge of the area, with the Cameroon midfielder carrying the ball into the box.
Paulo Ferreira slid in and tripped Fabregas, but Song had the presence of mind not to wait for a whistle and swept a low left-footed shot across goal and into the bottom right corner.
Chelsea made a change at the start of the second half as the creative Brazilian Ramires replaced John Obi Mikel.
Arsenal, though, had a two-goal cushion after 51 minutes.
Van Persie held the ball up 30 yards out, and, as he was closed down, Michael Essien's challenge inadvertently pushed the ball straight to Walcott clean through on goal.
The England winger dashed to the edge of the box, where he drew Cech before sliding the ball along to Fabregas and the Arsenal skipper made no mistake from 15 yards.
Chelsea had little chance to recover, as Walcott smashed in goal number three just 90 seconds later.
Walcott robbed Malouda and fed Fabregas, who repaid the favour by sending the Arsenal winger away down the right for him to slot a low shot into the bottom left corner.
Ancelotti had to do something, and sent on Gael Kakuta, replacing Malouda.
Chelsea snatched a lifeline after 57 minutes when Drogba's free-kick floated through to the six-yard box, where it was nodded in by Ivanovic.
Branislav Ivanovic

Branislav Ivanovic heads Chelsea's goal, but it wasn't enough
Given Arsenal's recent record of failing to hold on to winning positions, the visitors rallied.
Chelsea made a final change when Ferreira was replaced by Jose Bosingwa.
Arsenal just about weathered the storm as the contest entered the final 20 minutes.
Nasri should then have done better when Kakuta's tame back-pass presented him with the ball 10 yards from goal, but Cech was out quickly to block.
With 18 minutes left, Walcott was replaced by defensive midfielder Abou Diaby who made his first appearance since mid-October, before Marouane Chamakh came on for Van Persie.
Diaby's close-range effort was blocked by Frank Lampard and Kakuta's bundled effort was ruled out for offside as the Gunners closed out for a long-overdue victory against their championship rivals and moved within two points of leaders Manchester United, albeit having played a game more.

Bruce: I moved for Beckham last year

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has revealed that he made an audacious attempt to sign former Manchester United team-mate David Beckham on loan from LA Galaxy last year.
Steve Bruce and David Beckham
David Beckham and Steve Bruce played together for four years at Old Trafford
Bruce was Beckham's captain at Old Trafford before he left the club in 1996, and the centre-back had already moved on before the midfielder shot to superstardom in the years that followed.
But when Beckham revealed he was looking for another temporary move back to Europe last season to boost his chances of playing for England at the World Cup, Bruce made a move to re-unite himself with his former team-mate.
Unfortunately for the Wearsiders' boss, Beckham chose to return to Italian giants AC Milan rather than become the biggest signing in Sunderland's history - a decision that Bruce admits he can understand. "Certainly I tried 18 months ago," Bruce said. "I did try when he went to Milan. [It was a case of] Milan or Sunderland, or Birmingham or Wigan? He just said, 'Thanks Brucie I'm going to Milan'. I understand that. Milan and Prada or Sunderland and Primark?
"I still keep in touch with him. I was his captain but he wouldn't call me skip. I remember Beckham the year I left when we won the league at Middlesbrough and then he got the wonder-goal that put him on the road to stardom at Wimbledon. That coincided with my first game for Birmingham at Crystal Palace. A bit of a come-down."
Bruce added that he "can't see" Beckham ever turning out for a Premier League club other than Manchester United, despite the former England captain continuing to be regularly linked with a return to English football.
The Sunderland boss also took the opportunity to outline the European ambitions he harbours for his side, though he admitted that the Wearsiders are not quite where he wants them to be yet.
"When I joined 18 months ago and had a conversation with the owner (Ellis Short) he didn't want to be in a relegation fight again," Bruce said. "We've made big strides towards that, we are decent. As for Europe, it has never been mentioned above me.
"And I don't think we should just yet. Let's keep our feet on the ground. Let's try to get through the winter and let's see where we can be when spring comes. And if we can get to the magical 45, 48 points with five or six games left fantastic.
"Europe is a huge slog. I would love to see European football here but it stretches your resources to the limit because it is not just a knock-out competition any more. It goes on forever. However it would still be a wonderful achievement if we could do it. I am convinced the club could cope, if you look at the last few years it has expanded fantastically.
"I had dinner with the owner last week and he is excited about the future ahead and now he is excited I wouldn't rule it out that we can still go on and smash our transfer record as long as the owner keeps doing what he has done in the past. I don't think it will be January because I genuinely believe now that there is nobody out there."

Manchester double act

Manchester United will be able to enjoy Monday's showdown between Arsenal and Chelsea after they defeated Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford on Boxing Day. Victory extends the Red Devils' advantage over their London rivals to five and six points respectively, and Sir Alex Ferguson's side have now won 14 of their last 15 fixtures on December 26.
Dimitar Berbatov goal United v Sunderland
GettyImagesDimitar Berbatov nodded Manchester United into the lead against Sunderland
Ferguson always attaches great importance to the Christmas period, acknowledging the vast possibility for change in the title race as United embarked on a 10-day period in which they will play four league games. And, without the services of two of their most reliable players, the league leaders had far too much for Steve Bruce's in-form Sunderland.
Nani and Darren Fletcher both missed out due to injury and illness respectively, but that only meant that the imperious Ryan Giggs stepped back into the side, and he excelled in a sizzling United performance. The Red Devils led as early as the fifth minute, with Wayne Rooney chipping the ball over for Dimitar Berbatov to convert, and from that moment Sunderland were on damage limitation duty.
Rooney, playing like a man revived following a difficult six months, came agonisingly close to emulating Eric Cantona's famous chip against Sunderland as he beat the helpless Craig Gordon, only to see the ball drift wide of the far post. Moments later it was Anderson trying his luck, bending the ball from just inside the area, only to see his effort rebound off the woodwork.
Some of United's build-up play deserved a second goal, yet when the clincher arrived they were grateful for a significant deflection off Anton Ferdinand as Berbatov's strike completely wrong-footed Gordon in the Sunderland goal.
Manchester City remain a very present contender in the Premier League title race after they became the first top-flight team to record six away wins this season, beatingNewcastle 3-1 at St James' Park. Roberto Mancini's men are just two points behind United in the table, although they have played two more games.
Mancini began the day by delivering a warning to Mario Balotelli regarding his inconsistent form, and the benched forward will certainly have learned a thing or two from Carlos Tevez as City stunned the Magpies with two goals in the first five minutes. Both strikes were largely down to Tevez, who capitalised on Tim Krul's woeful pass to set up Gareth Barry inside two minutes, before starting and finishing the second with a left-foot volley.
In fairness to Newcastle, they resisted the temptation to capitulate and carved out several chances to get back into the match, eventually halving the deficit with 18 minutes remaining through Andy Carroll. Kevin Nolan then shaved the post when attempting to level, and City punished the miss as Tevez combined with Adam Johnson for the deflected clincher.
Tottenham went back into fifth place in the Premier League despite the sending off of Jermaine Defoe to win 2-1 at Aston Villa. Defoe was given his marching orders for a flying elbow on James Collins, but only after Rafael van der Vaart continued his fine form by smashing a 23rd minute opener.
Villa failed to take advantage of the situation and a Tottenham counter attack, with great work from Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon, set the Dutchman up for his second to kill off the tie. Villa scored a consolation from Marc Albrighton, but it was too little too late for Gerard Houllier's men, who continued their dreadful run of Boxing Day defeats.
West Ham breathed life into their Premier League survival bid with a 3-1 win over fellow strugglers Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Fulham made a bright start and Aaron Hughes netted his first goal in six years when climbing to head home Simon Davies' cross after he had been left alone in the penalty area. However, the Cottagers failed to cash in on the extended spells of possession they enjoyed and were made to pay for a mistake by Dickson Etuhu, who turned the ball into Carlton Cole's path - enabling the Hammers' striker to prod a shot beyond Mark Schwarzer. West Ham edged in front just before the interval when Scott Parker picked out an unmarked Frederic Piquionne at the far post and he volleyed home.
Cole enjoys his days out against Fulham and he made the points safe on 73 minutes when he pounced on a long ball and flashed a shot beyond Schwarzer for his sixth goal in his last five games against the west London side. Rob Green ensured there was no chance of a Fulham revival when pulling off a remarkable save with his right hand to deny Eddie Johnson, moments after Cole had added the third.
Fulham now find themselves in the bottom three after Wigan overcame Wolves 2-1 in a proverbial six-pointer at the bottom of the table. The result sees Wigan move three points clear of the drop zone.
The Latics had only won one away league game all season, but it took just nine minutes to silence the Molineux faithful, with Hugo Rodallega using his body excellently to send a right-footed volley past Wayne Hennessey. That lead was doubled on 20 minutes as Tom Cleverley once again caught the eye on loan from Manchester United, breaking clear to slam the ball through Hennessey's legs, and that goal sealed the points despite Steve Fletcher's 87th-minute consolation.
Robert Huth goal Blackburn v Stoke
PA PhotosRobert Huth's goal set Stoke on their way to a 2-0 win at Ewood Park
Elsewhere, Steve Kean is still looking for his first win as Blackburn manager after they lost 2-0 at home to Stoke. Matt Etherington was guilty of a glaring miss as the teams entered the interval with the scores goalless, but Robert Huth headed his fourth of the season six minutes into the second period, before Marc Wilson completed the victory to heap pressure on Rovers' new owners.
And Bolton are temporarily up to fifth, two points behind Chelsea, thanks to a 2-0 triumph over West Brom at the Reebok Stadium. Matt Taylor's first goal in 23 outings broke the deadlock in the first half, and Johan Elmander killed the game off with four minutes remaining.

Leonardo tight-lipped over Inter

Leonardo has refused to be drawn on speculation he is set to replace Rafael Benitez as Inter Milan boss following the Spaniard's departure.
Leonardo: Thumbs up for Inter job?
Inter confirmed Benitez's exit after just six months in charge at the San Siro and former AC Milan boss Leonardo has been widely tipped as the man to replace Benitez, despite his long association with the Nerazzurri's city rivals.
Inter president Massimo Moratti has denied he has made contact with any possible replacement, while Leonardo has claimed he had not spoken to anyone about the job.
''I know less than you,'' he told Sky Sport 24. ''The only thing that I can say now is merry Christmas to you.''
Benitez's departure had been expected following five days of speculation after he appeared to issue an ultimatum to Moratti to sack him or back him in the transfer market.
Benitez made the comments following a poor start to the season that finds Inter 13 points adrift of leaders Milan in seventh place.
Moratti admitted, in confirming Benitez's sacking, that he had been angered by the comments, but was tight-lipped about a potential replacement, telling ANSA: ''All the names that circulate about the next Inter coach are interesting.''
Asked if it would be Leonardo, he told reporters: ''We'll see, I will tell you when we decide. All the people we have in mind are experienced, brave and intelligent. However, when the time comes we'll tell.''
Brazilian Leonardo, 41, had two spells at Milan as a player and also served as technical director before taking over the coaching reins last season. He lasted just one season, however, after he was sacked after guiding the Rossoneri to third place in Serie A.
Milan vice president Adriano Galliani admitted it would be strange to see a player he helped bring to the club from Paris St Germain in 1997 on the bench of their rivals.
''I do not know what my reaction would be,'' he said. ''He certainly has an important history with Milan. He made a career with AC Milan; first as a player, then as a coach and a manager.
''Last year this went wrong, but without all of the injuries they could have been better. I was sorry to see him go.''

Platini to remain UEFA president

UEFA president Michel Platini will be re-elected for another four year-term in March after no candidates emerged before the deadline of midnight on Wednesday.
Sepp Blatter with Michel Platini
Michel Platini will not have to face an election next year, though Sepp Blatter's future is less certain
Platini's was the only name put forward, meaning he will continue unopposed as the chief of European football's governing body until 2015.
UEFA said in a statement: "As of today, 23 December 2010, only one candidate has been announced: current UEFA president Michel Platini will be seeking a second four-year term of office from 2011 to 2015.''
Platini, the former France captain and coach, became president in 2007 after beating Sweden's Lennart Johansson in a hard-fought election contest.
Since then he has overseen some far-reaching changes in European club and international football. From 2016, the European Championships final tournament will have 24 teams rather than 16, and he has also shaken up the Champions League so that there are more league champions from smaller countries and fewer clubs from the bigger nations in the group stage.
The biggest change could be yet to come with UEFA's financial fair play rules coming into force from 2012. Under these, clubs in European football will be limited to spending what they earn, although there will be some flexibility in the first years of the scheme.
Platini will be formally re-elected at the UEFA Congress in Paris on March 22.

Tendangan bebas melengkung khasnya ia berhasil memperdaya kiper Yunani, Antonis Nikopolidis.

Real Madrid, Euro 2004, LA Galaxy, AC Milan
